For Mandela Day, Media24 Books Pretoria (staff from Van Schaik Publishers and NB Publishers) supported the Thuthuzela Care Centre in Mamelodi and the children’s ward of the Mamelodi Hospital.
We took 50 care packs to the Thuthuzela Centre that included toiletries, clothes, colouring books and soft toys. The pamper packs were filled with donations from staff members. This centre operates on a 24-hour basis and anyone can go there for help. A team of qualified professionals, including medical examiners, forensic nurses, counsellors and other staff, provides holistic care for male and female victims of rape and sexual assault. The victims range from babies from 3 months old to adults. The aim is to support victims and avoid secondary victimisation, and to assist with bringing criminals to justice.
We donated blankets, books, toys, colouring books and crayons to the Mamelodi Hospital children’s ward, and spent some time with the children. Some kids immediately started colouring in while others were cheered up by stories read by some of us. We treated the nursing staff, as well as the staff at the Thuthuzela Centre, to some cupcakes and cold drinks.
The experience was a sincere eye-opener not only because of the terrifying crimes committed on our doorstep, but also because of the endless possibilities for us to keep supporting these causes. If anyone would like to contact someone at Thuthuzela Centre or Mamelodi Hospital, you are welcome to contact Daleen Venter (
