Medical terminology for students of the health professions offers a systematic approach to explaining terminology to South African entry-level students of the health sciences, including students of medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, radiography, dietetics, human movement sciences, speech-language pathology and audiology, and veterinary sciences.
The focus of this book is on relevant terms that are commonly used in health sciences. It includes an introductory overview, extensive coverage of basic medical vocabulary, as well as more specific terms related to systems of the body and veterinary sciences. Most chapters also contain useful contextual notes on individual term parts, which are explained in a logical and accessible manner, along with interesting background notes on the Classical heritage of some terms which can aid understanding. Various types of exercises are included throughout the chapters to support comprehension, application, and confidence in using medical terminology. Reference material, including eponyms, term parts and their meanings, commonly used abbreviations, and an index of medical terms, is provided at the end of the book.
This book is designed in such a way that students who study this textbook over a semester will be well equipped to analyse, understand and accurately use most of the specialised terminology of health and related sciences, derived from Greek and Latin, with confidence during their studies and professional careers.
